Happy Accidents

For a while I’ve been wanted to make a just-for-fun art piece using liquid Latex to mask off a line of text, but didn’t exactly know WHAT exactly.

In my quest to find “art quotes” and inspiration, I came across a nice classic from Bob Ross “We don’t make mistakes, we have happy accidents.” and that inspired me to make a splatter art piece. Something I’ve always wanted to try!

It was a quick evening of just splashing various paint colours at a piece of paper, and honestly, I had fun doing it.

I measured off the text, and carefully masked it in using liquid Latex.

The idea was anywhere Bob had hair, it would be done in paint splatters in watercolour. Eyebrows being the exception.

And I just went to town on it.

And I kept going until I was satisfied with the result. I did have a tiny issue with some of the thinner portions of the hair, like above his forehead, but in the end, I decided to just go all in with the splatters there too.

Removed the masking and added some additional paint splatters because it was just too shaped.

Also, yes. I know Bob Ross was an oil painter and not a watercolour artist. But watercolour is just so much easier to splatter and dries waaaay faster than oil paint.

I’m very happy with how it turned out! He’s got a bit of a porn-stash, but meh. I’m not going to lose sleep over it. I think it will look lovely on my wall.

Thank you for the inspiration, Bob Ross! Now it’s time to wipe up all the stray paint splatters around the workspace.
